Historic Sewing Workshops
HISTORIC SEWING WORKSHOPS
Courses meet the second Thursday of every month. (Specific Dates TBD)
Time: 6:00-8:00 pm
Location: Bushy Run Stone Room
Cost: $20 for both instructional course & open studio; $10 for open studio only
Instructor: Jessica Young, Penny River Historic & Custom Costumes
Come learn historical sewing techniques in these hands-on, evening workshops! Each class will be comprised of one hour of formal instruction and one hour of open studio time that will allow any and all levels of sewers to come work on projects of their choice or practice their stitching in a group setting.
Classes will focus on the basics of hand sewing from a historical perspective and will be appropriate for all sewing levels, from true “never held a needle” beginners to proficient craftspeople. Participants will study and practice the most common stitches and their uses with instructional materials dating to the 18th and 19th century (as well as modern sources). All class participants will be given the chance to create a sampler book with their own work as a reference for future projects and are welcome to stay for the Open Studio hour following class. Students are welcome to work at their own pace, and ample hands-on instruction will be provided.
Sampler instruction books, needles, thread, and fabric swatches will be provided for all paid class participants.
The historical sewing open studio invites craftspeople from all eras to meet and work in the company of each other and experts. It’s nearly impossible to make well fitting clothes for yourself *by* yourself, and this is the perfect place to get help fitting your corset, setting a sleeve, or making sure that hem is even! All levels of proficiency, and all eras of history are welcome in this BYO Project cooperative atmosphere. Sewing machines, irons and boards, and other equipment will be available for use for studio participants.
Coffee/Tea and light refreshments will be available for the duration of both the instructional and open studio course components.
Courses will take place the second Thursday of every month beginning unless otherwise noted. Each course will be led by expert, historical seamstress Jessica Young, owner of Penny River Historic & Custom Costumes. Her work can be viewed and purchased at pennyriver.etsy.com.
2020 Course Dates Include: January 9, February 13, March 12, and April 9 (additional dates may be added)
